On a night in 2006, Captain Adam J. Webb was jolted awake by rocket fire at Kandahar Airfield, an experience that was, by then, eerily familiar. It is one of countless vivid moments captured in A Brotherhood of Unbreakable Bonds, the candid autobiography of a thirty-one year career that took him from a childhood on film sets in England to the front lines of some of Canada’s most significant military deployments.
Adam moved to Canada at sixteen to pursue his dream of military service, and what followed was a career defined by reinvention: mobile support equipment operator, infantryman, armoured crewman and cavalryman, combat medic, nursing officer, and trainee pilot. Along the way, he served on five overseas operations that shaped both his life and Canada’s role on the world stage, including Cyprus as a United Nations Peacekeeper during the first Gulf War with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in 1991, Somalia with the Canadian Airborne Regiment in 1993, Bosnia with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) in 1997-1998, Afghanistan as a trauma nurse with the Role 3 Multi National Medical Unit in Kandahar in 2006, and a humanitarian assistance mission with the United States Navy aboard the USS Pearl Harbor sailing the South Pacific in 2013.
Told with humour, honesty, and an unflinching eye, A Brotherhood of Unbreakable Bonds moves from the chaos of combat zones to the quieter, often harder, work of coming home. It is a story about the bonds forged between soldiers, the cost of service, and the resilience and hope that carried one man through it all, and that he hopes will resonate with anyone facing their own difficult chapters.
This book is dedicated to his son Rowan, a bright shining star who has given him direction in the darkest of times.
